Being the first African woman to own and operate a successful gallery of African art in New York has given me ample opportunity to reflect.
My father taught me everything about being a trader in the market. He supplemented his income by selling African art, which took us to New York City and as far as neighboring regions in Eastern America. It was in those markets that I first experienced the power of doing business and its rewards. It was also where I saw, for the first time, an African woman driving a car. She was shopping with confidence and purpose, and her determination left a lasting impression on me. That was in 1992.
Within two years, I was in New York City.
Countless people helped me realize my dreams in America. I arrived with just a few African carvings to start my journey. I quickly built a loyal clientele, selling masks, stools, and chairs. Over time, I was introduced to the art dealers at the African Art Center, located in the vibrant Chelsea art district on 28th Street.
This is MadioArt—a celebration of African heritage, a bridge between cultures, and a testament to what can be achieved through passion, resilience, and the power of art.
To inspire and connect people to African heritage through authentic and transformative artistry.
To celebrate African culture by curating timeless art that bridges tradition and modernity, empowering creativity and connection.
We are driven by authenticity, passion, and craftsmanship, transforming the world through meaningful and inspiring art.
